Tips for International Travelers

Each form of transportation entails specific safety and travel tips that should be taken into consideration by the traveler. Aside from traveling by air, there are those traveling by sea through a ferry or cruise ship and others traveling by train or even with a private vehicle. For U.S. travelers, going to other parts of the North American continent makes it possible for them to travel outside the country via a bus or car. Some nearby islands are conveniently reachable via sea transport, while other countries overseas already require a plane ride.
  1. Getting Travel Insurance

    • To make the vacation worry-free from risks of unexpected expenses due to travel emergencies or even getting sick especially because of the sudden change in weather and environment, getting travel insurance provides the traveler peace of mind. A basic policy can cover medical expenses, delayed flights, baggage problems and other emergency situations such as loss, damage, or theft on personal possessions the policy owner encounters during the travel.

    Packing for the Trip

    • Limitations on the baggage is more typically encountered when traveling by air because of the baggage limit imposed by airlines. However, bringing too much even if traveling via a personal vehicle also poses the risk of accidentally leaving things behind, being unable to find emergency items right away and burdening oneself with carrying too much baggage. It is always ideal to bring all necessities, while keeping in mind to pack light for a more convenient trip.

It is also important to take note of any regulated or prohibited item during the trip. For modes of transportation not imposing such, it is still the traveler's responsibility of whether or not to bring any smelly, hazardous, dangerous or high-risk item that may cause fire, bad smell, accidental cuts or spilled liquids during the trip.

    Paying Duties and Taxes

    • Things brought and bought during international travel may be bound by customs duties and taxes from the country being visited. Usually, there are also quantity limits on certain items that can be brought duty-free during the trip. To avoid hassle with items brought, it is best to check the local laws and customs rules and regulations of the country of destination prior to the travel. More specific information is typically available in the library, travel agency, embassies and consulates and tourist bureaus of the country to visit.

    Bringing Important Documents

    • Whether traveling abroad for a short visit or for a long period, it is important to bring original identification and other related legal documents and their photocopies during the travel. Aside from bringing the passport, having copies of insurance policies, special power of attorney, list of important phone numbers, emails and addresses and other important documents make the traveler feel secure and prepared for any emergency.
