Tips for First Time International Travelers

With the travel industry doing everything possible to make international travel attractive, consider taking a trip abroad. If you are traveling for the first time, this could be both exciting and fearful since you will be traveling to a foreign country whose culture and traditions may be very different from your own.
  1. Passport & Visa

    • A passport is needed to gain entry into a foreign country. A passport is a document that not gives proof of your identity but also mentions your nationality. If you do not have a passport, then apply for one at least two months ahead of your trip. It usually takes six weeks to obtain a passport, hence plan accordingly. If you already possess a passport, ensure that it is valid for at least six months after your travel date. Look up the official website of the country of your destination to obtain information on the necessary documents and immunizations required for the country you are traveling to. Some countries do not require a visa for American citizens who travel for less than 90 days. On the contrary, some African and Asian countries require a visa on arrival for which you need to visit the local embassy in your place and obtain a visa.

    Flight Schedules

    • It is important that you check and recheck your flight schedules before making reservations. You have to be absolutely sure that you have enough time to clear customs and catch connecting flights to the country of your destination before booking. This will avoid tension at the last moment as well as avoid delays and problems. Also, be aware of different time zones; prepare yourself accordingly so that you arrive at your travel destination completely relaxed.

    Destination Considerations

    • Get hold of a good guidebook and read about the country you are visiting. It is a good idea to know a little about the places you plan to visit, the local customs and traditions, the weather conditions and the local currency. It also helps to learn a few important words in the local language to help you get around the place easily. Bring along some local currency of the place you are visiting to use as soon as you land. Your local bank should be able to provide you with the currency of the place you plan to visit.

    Pack Light

    • Don't go overboard with your packing. Pack only what is absolutely essential like clothing. Most countries have pharmacies where shampoos and other toiletries of well known brands are easily available so avoid carrying them. In case there is a particular brand of toiletry which is not easily available, then take it along but transfer it to small size bottles to save on space.
