Tips for First Class Air Travel

First class travel is considered a luxury, but it wasn't always that way. In the early days of airline travel, only the wealthiest people could fly and all passengers traveled with first class amenities. However, those days are long gone. Today, it is only by flying first class that you have access to certain amenities.
  1. First class tickets

    • Discounted first class tickets and free upgrades do exist. Look for "Y-UP," "K-UP" and "Q-UP" fares online. Although they are listed and priced as coach tickets, these seats are located in the first class cabin. You can also use miles accrued through major credit cards and frequent flyers programs to purchase first class tickets. Airlines occasionally offer free upgrades to frequent flyers upon check-in. If you are not a frequent flyer, book on a larger aircraft or a flight full of holiday travelers. Larger planes incorporate more first class seats, and holiday travelers frequently fly coach. Thus, you'll have a better chance of receiving a free upgrade on these flights. When free upgrades aren't available, you can purchase a discounted upgrade at the airport, if they're available.

    Shortened wait times

    • Most airports offer separate check-in lines for first class flyers. Although you can't avoid security screenings, first class passengers often have a separate, shorter security line. First class passengers also have the convenience of boarding the plane and disembarking first. Plus, airlines prioritize first class baggage, so the wait at baggage claim is shorter.

    Club privileges

    • International and domestic first class passengers have access to private airport lounges at many major airports and are allowed to bring one guest. All lounges are exclusive and provide first-class passengers with the opportunity to receive VIP treatment in a relaxed environment. Each lounge provides airport specific amenities that often include include food and beverages, showers, reading materials and Internet access.

    Etiquette

    • Although it is not airline policy, wear proper business attire and carefully groom yourself when traveling first class. You'll blend in and not risk the embarrassment of removal, which has has occurred to at least one poorly dressed executive. Children aren't restricted from first class, but it is considered polite for them to travel in coach. A poll indicated that nine out of ten people prefer that children do not travel first class, according to Skytrax poll reported by MSNBC. Reasons cited include disruption and the perceived inability of children to appreciate first class.

    Enjoying the Experience

    • Take advantage of all the amenities that first class travelers have access to. First class passengers aren't charged for alcoholic beverages, snacks, meals, in-flight entertainment or extra luggage. First class passengers also have a separate flight attendant, so requests are quickly met. Coat hangers and a separate bathroom are also exclusive to first class. International flights often feature seats that extend into beds, and all first class seats have extra space and legroom.
