Traveling on a plane while pregnant can be difficult, but it is manageable. Space is confined and you might be worried about your safety and if it is even possible to fly. But with a little planning, you can have a safe flight that is as comfortable as possible.
Domestic travel via airplane is safe up until the 36th week of pregnancy. If for some reason you must travel after this point, you'll need a note from your doctor indicating that you're safe for airline travel. It's a good idea to carry a doctor's note with you anyhow, just in case you are stopped by airline security and asked how far along in your pregnancy you are. This is for your safety and the safety of the baby.
To maximize the amount of space you'll have on the plane, its best to avoid getting a middle seat. An aisle seat is ideal so you don't have to pass people to get to the bathroom for those frequent visits. Sometimes while booking your flight online you are given the option between aisle and window. If you are not given this option, after booking, go directly to that airline's website. Log into your account or create one and look up your seat number. The website will show you a diagram of empty seats that you can choose from. If your particular airline doesn't do this, then your last option is to ask as you check-in. The airline should be able to accommodate you if there are open spaces.
Take snacks with you. Pregnant females need to consume an added 300 calories a day in order to meet their unborn child's nutritional needs. Airline food may be inadequate, and lthough the airline will sometimes also provide snacks of pretzels or chips, this is not a sufficient or healthy enough snack for you. Take along a sandwich, cheese, or fresh fruit. A bag of roasted almonds is also a healthy choice.
Now that you are bigger, things may be a little more cramped and uncomfortable on a plane. Plan to take items with you that will reduce discomfort. This can be a small pillow to take a nap with or slippers if your feet become swollen. You might want to take a small blanket as well. Wear loose, comfortable clothing in material that is breathable, such as cotton.
