Ideas for Labor Day Weekend in California

California offers a wide variety of activities for people of all ages over Labor Day weekend. From camping to fine arts, there is something for everyone, and it doesn't matter whether you live in the northern or southern part of the state. All areas of California offer camping at state and national parks, and there are unforgettable art festivals offered in both Northern and Southern California.
  1. Sausalito Art Festival

    • The Sausalito Art Festival is a three-day festival held every year on Labor Day weekend on the San Francisco Bay shoreline, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The festival began in 1952 and has grown every year since. According to its official website, the festival offers a "world-class collection of fine art and craft." Visitors can enjoy more than 20,000 works of art; constant live entertainment on three different stages; and a wide variety of gourmet food, champagne, and wine from California.

    Camping

    • California is home to numerous state and national parks, as well as other local parks and grounds that allow camping. National parks that allow camping include Yosemite National Park, Sequoia and Kings Canyon, and the Redwood National Park, while camping-friendly state parks include Cuyamaca Rancho, Brannan Island and Mount Tamalpais.

Camping is a great way to spend the holiday weekend with friends and family while enjoying the natural wonders of California. National and state park websites do recommend making your reservations well in advance since there are limited camping spots available at each location and they fill up quickly over holiday weekends.

    Fireworks

    • California's Great America Theme Park, located in Santa Clara (in between San Jose and San Francisco in Northern California) offers a spectacular fire works display for its guests over Labor Day weekend. The park also offers a wide variety of themed rides and roller coasters, Nickelodeon characters, live shows, a water park, and a designated kid's area.

    Fiesta Hermosa

    • Fiesta Hermosa is a three-day arts and crafts festival held every year over Labor Day weekend that bills itself as the largest arts and crafts fair in Southern California. It began in 1974, and has become a popular destination for those living in the Hermosa Beach area. The festival has over 270 arts and crafts vendors and two stages featuring live music. The massive food court area provides 18 unique kinds of ethnic food, including Thai, Greek, and Mexican. It also has a Charity Beer and Wine Garden that highlights drinks produced by local wineries and breweries, and a Kiddie Carnival for children ages 3 to 10.
