Time Required for a US Passport Renewal

Unfortunately, United States passports are not good for eternity. To ensure security and that all information stays current, you must renew your passport after a certain amount of time.
  1. Minors

    • Passports for minors are invalid after they turn 18. When you turn 18, you must apply for an adult passport.

    Adults

    • Passports stay valid for 15 years. On your passport, there is a date listed of when it expires for your convenience.

    Mail

    • You can renew your passport by mail if it was issued after you turned 16, within the 15 years of validity, is undamaged and has your current name on it. Any other renewals must be done at a U.S. Embassy.

    Marriage

    • If you change your name because of marriage, divorce or any other reason, you must apply for a new passport. Your name must always match your legal name. This must be done by applying for a new passport at the post office or visiting a U.S. Embassy.

    Lost or Stolen

    • All lost and stolen passports must be reported for the nation's security. This can be done online or at the U.S. Embassy.
