Documents Required for Passport Renewal

If you were 16 or older when you received your last passport, and it was issued less than 15 years ago, you can renew your passport by mail. Not only will you save the processing fee charged by the U.S. Postal Service but your trip to the post office will also be much shorter.
  1. Required Documents

    • Form DS-82
      Previous U.S. Passport
      Two Identical Recent Photos - 2" X 2"
Payment in the form of personal check or money order

    Get the Right Form

    • You can complete the passport renewal form DS-82 online and print out the completed form or pick up a form at your local post office and fill it out the old-fashioned way.

    Acceptable Photos

    • Photos must have a light background and should show ears and eyes. Head coverings are not permitted, unless they are for religious purposes. If your religion requires a head covering, please include a written statement explaining its use. Passport photo requirements are strict, so be sure to check that your photos meet all of the necessary requirements.

    Don't Forget

    • Be sure to sign your application and include any necessary renewal payments.

    How Should I Send it?

    • Send in your application via Priority Mail with delivery confirmation. With delivery confirmation from the Postal Service, you will know that your application has been delivered to the Department of State.

How Long Before my New Passport Arrives?

    • Routine service takes approximately four to six weeks. Expedited service takes approximately five to 10 business days and requires an additional fee. Be sure to mark the outside of the envelope "Expedited" if you enclose that fee. Check the link below for expedited service details.
