How to Quickly Get a US Passport for the First Time

Sometimes a trip out of the United States comes up unexpectedly, creating the need to obtain your first passport in a hurry. Generally, it takes approximately four to six week to receive your passport from the time your application was submitted. However, you can pay to have it expedited, which will then take approximately two to four weeks to receive.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill out the application for a U.S. Passport, Form DS-11; however, do not sign the application. Passport applications can be downloaded from the U.S. Department of State website or picked up at any local courthouse and many post offices.

    • 2

Return the form in person to your local courthouse or passport acceptance facility. Bring the application, two passport photos and all required documentation, including a certified birth certificate or certificate of U.S. Citizenship and a valid driver's license or state-issued photo ID card. Sign and date the application when the clerk or agent instructs you to do so.

    • 3

Tell the court clerk or passport agent that you want your application expedited. The clerk or agent will mark your application for expedited service.

    • 4

Pay the application fee and expedited service fee. As of November 2010, the cost for a U.S. Passport is $140 with a $25 execution fee. Expedited service costs $60 plus another $14.96 for overnight delivery. If you need your passport in a hurry, it is recommended to pay for the overnight service.
