How to Fly for the First Time

To fly for the first time is an exhilarating experience. While some people choose to embrace the adventure, others have fears and concerns. Learn how to fly for the first time to properly prepare physically and mentally for flight.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase airline tickets for your destination. Use a travel agent, purchase directly through your departure airport or buy tickets online.

    • 2

Arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before your flight is scheduled to depart. Check any bags that you don't plan to carry on, pass through security check points and locate your terminal.

    • 3

Observe all safety procedures as demonstrated by flight attendants and as illustrated in safety brochures found at your seat. Practice buckling and unbuckling your safety belt and stay seated when required. Locate emergency exits and ask questions if you think of any.

    • 4

Prepare for the change in cabin air pressure. The change can cause your ears to pop. To alleviate this feeling, chew gum, swallow repeatedly and yawn.

    • 5

Expect turbulance to cause brief but common disruptions during flight. Turbulance is not serious and the pilots know how to properly fly through and avoid turbulance.

    • 6

Relax during your first flight. Look out of the window at the amazing view. Enjoy a meal or snack, if provided by the airline. Read a magazine or watch an in-flight movie, if shown. Once you land, proceed to the baggage claim area (if you checked luggage) to retrieve your belongings.
