Air travel is getting to be more expensive these days, thanks to rising oil prices. While most major airlines no longer offer discounts to seniors, if you know where to look for the deals, you still can save money. It's just a matter of doing a little research. Timing is important, too. Sale tickets typically are available only for a few days at most; therefore, hitting those special promotions is the key.
Get discounted or free airline tickets through a credit card rewards program. Earn points for every dollar of purchases charged. Some retired seniors, who are both frequent flyers and frequent buyers, can travel to visit distant children and grandchildren at a significantly reduced rate by redeeming points and using them for airline discounts.
Take advantage of low winter airfares. Off-season rates are becoming more attractive to retired travelers, as hotels and all-inclusive vacation packages are cheaper then, too.
Book reservations for vacation trips at least six months in advance. It's best to book air travel as early as possible before the lower-price seats on the flight are taken.
Pay early to get low-priced promotional airfare. Qualify for early-bird discounts by buying tickets seven days to two weeks in advance.
Inquire about companion deals, which allow you to bring a fellow traveler at a discounted rate.
Ask about off-peak discount fares, rather than scheduling flights during peak business travel. You also can save money by booking airfare for several days in advance of busy holiday travel.
Consider flying on a smaller airline or departing from a smaller airport. There may be fewer flights from which to choose, but if the airline flies anywhere near to where you are going, you are sure to benefit from cheaper airfares.
Join a frequent flyer program. If you travel regularly, you could earn a free flight.
