Determine what visa to apply for. There are many different types of visas from tourist visas to immigrant visas and everything in between. It is important to apply for the correct visa for your particular situation because if you apply with the wrong form you will more than likely be denied and have to start over. That is why it is so important to do the research and determine which visa to apply for. There are 20 different types of non-immigrant visas and you can read a description of each on the Department of State's website.
Complete the appropriate form. Once you know what visa to apply for you must complete the form. Generally, there are several pages of instructions that go along with a one- or two-page form. Make sure you read the instructions once or twice before you begin completing the form to make sure you are doing it correctly. Check the directions frequently to ensure your application will be perfect. Any mistake could result in the denial of your application.
Submit the appropriate form, fee, and identifying documents. Many visas like the K1 or K3 visas require initial approval before an interview may be scheduled. There are other visas, like tourist visas, that only require an appointment for an interview. The type of visa you are applying for will dictate what you should do. All visas will include the interview process.
Schedule the interview. Most of the time the consulates and embassies are booked solid with interviews so it is important to schedule your interview as far in advance as possible. Remember that there is a fee associated with your interview and that it must be paid before the interview will be scheduled.
Attend the interview. Once you have your interview scheduled you need to show up on time. If you do not show up on time you may lose your appointment and money. Be sure to take your personal documents with you to the interview including passport, bank statements, house titles and any other information that is required. Upon reviewing your information your visa will be approved or denied. If denied, a stamp will be placed in your passport. If approved, your passport will be kept for the day, or longer, for the visa to be printed and placed in your passport. Once you have your visa, you are ready to travel.
