How to Get a Visa for Travel to Britain With Convictions

If you are planning a trip to Britain and you have convictions, don't even think about traveling without a visa. Failing to obtain a visa or disclose criminal convictions prior to overseas travel can earn you a one-way ticket back home. Some travelers fail to disclose prior convictions and apply for a travel visa out of lack of knowledge or fear of immediate denial to travel, but the British consulates grant travel permissions to many individuals with convictions every day. With that in mind, don't let your legal woes deter you from traveling across the pond lawfully with a peace of mind.

Complete the online visa forms at UK Visas and print your completed visa application. Save the confirmation email, which contains a unique application ID number starting with "GWF," for future reference.

    • 4

Pay the $12 visa application fee online at the UK Visa site with a MasterCard or Visa credit card. Print the confirmation email from the UK Border Agency.

    • 5

Attend your biometrics appointment for fingerprinting as directed on the visa online application or find an Application Support Center on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services site. Bring your passport and printed confirmation of your online visa application.

    • 6

Mail original copies of supporting documents like a passport, official record of any convictions, evidence of current income and employment status, a planned itinerary and hotel and flight bookings to the UK Border Agency. You have two weeks from the date of your biometric appointment to send these documents. View the full UK Border Agency supporting documents checklist to ensure all required documents are included in your package.

Wait for the UK Border Agency's email to confirm receipt of your visa application and a second email detailing the final decision on your visa application. Save the UPS tracking number in the decision email to track your returned documents package.
