Before leaving for your journey, search the Internet for information about the particular airport in which you will be spending your time. Find out what other travelers say about the airport, and whether there are any particular stores, art exhibits or amenities that you want to take advantage of while you are there. Singapore's Changi Airport, for example, offers bus tours of the city, napping pods, a free movie theater and a swimming pool. However, be cautious about making any plans to leave the airport during your layover -- most airports are located outside the city center and you don't want to risk missing your flight, and some airlines have restrictions on leaving the airport after your bags have been checked.
Many international airports offer lounges in which you can pay to spend a few hours or the entire day. The lounges are typically quieter than the public areas of the airport, and they have more comfortable furniture for relaxing and taking naps. Many day rooms offer magazines and TV, as well as free snacks and drinks, often including alcoholic beverages. Some airports offer individual day rooms, and others offer rooms with showers and exercise facilities.
Drinking enough water is one of the best ways to overcome the jet lag that you will probably experience during an international flight layover. It might be tempting to drink coffee to wake up or alcohol to relax, especially free drinks offered on the airplane and in the day room, but make sure to also drink plenty of water and try not to consume too many dehydrating salty foods.
Take a walk around the airport to get some exercise. If the airport has a gym, take advantage of it. Even if you feel tired, moving around a bit will help you fight jet lag during your layover. Walking will also help pass the time and give you the opportunity to explore your airport's amenities.
Check the clock regularly and be sure to arrive at your departure gate with plenty of time to spare before the flight leaves. Most international airports are quite large, so your departure gate might be in a separate terminal from your arrival gate or the day room. Allow extra time to get there.
