Airport Tips for Travellers

Airline travel is much more complicated than it used to be. Travelers are required to be at the airport earlier, baggage restrictions are more stringent, and security concerns are paramount. Careful planning can help navigate airline regulations. Whether you're traveling for business or pleasure, taking mountains of luggage or your pet, there are ways to prepare and cope with the new guidelines while making the trip comfortable and pleasant.
  1. Ticket Planning

    • Book a direct flight if one is available to your destination. There is less chance of being delayed. When buying your ticket, use the exact name that appears on your passport or ID, and familiarize yourself with any document requirements in foreign countries if you're traveling there. Book a flight as early in the day as possible; delays back up as the day goes on.

    Packing

    • Bright suitcases are easier to find on the luggage carousel.

Purchase luggage in a bright color or pattern. Ribbons and tags can be torn off baggage, but a bright or unusual color will make it easy to find when you claim it. Pack disinfecting wipes in your carry-on for the tray table and anything else you might encounter that needs it. Do a baggage check for any forbidden items; for example, scissors or nail files. Save samples of cosmetics and prescriptions to avoid packing large containers. Pack electronic equipment in a single layer to avoid delays during security checks.

    On Board

    • Once you're on the plane, stow your bag in the overhead as close to your seat as possible to speed up leaving once the plane lands. Keep on-board necessities such as books or snacks with you at your seat by packing them in a small plastic resealable bag to avoid unearthing your carry-on every time you want something from it. A portable car seat for your child will keep her safer in the airline seat and more comfortable.

    Nap Time

    • If you plan to spend your airborne time sleeping, pack a small blanket and pillow. Some airlines charge for those amenities, and the ones the airlines supply are washed infrequently. Book a window seat right after purchasing your ticket to avoid people climbing over you when they want to get up. Dress in comfortable clothing and layer to be ready for temperature changes in the cabin. Avoid coffee and drink water instead; hydration encourages sleep. Bring your own water, in case there's a charge.

    Packable Pets

    • Your pet will need an approved pet carrier for airline travel.

Airlines have specific regulations regarding size and transport of pets, so check with your individual carrier when you book your ticket to determine how your pet will travel. Small pets can usually travel in a regulation airline pet carrier under your seat; larger ones travel in a special air-controlled hold under the captain's cabin. A must for all animals is identification both on the pet's collar and the pet carrier. Bring copies of vaccination records and a photo of the pet. Pack your pet's food, along with any supplements or medications, in individual servings in small plastic bags for easy feeding.
