How to Change a Ticket at the Airport for an Earlier Flight

Maybe the last business meeting was canceled or the traffic to the airport wasn't as bad as you thought, but while standing in line to drop off your luggage you notice there is a flight leaving an hour earlier than your scheduled flight. Rather than sit around the airport wasting time, you decide to change your ticket for an earlier flight. However, according to MSNBC.com, as of September 2007, an earlier flight may lead to additional travel fees depending on the airline.

Join the ticket line. Walk up to the counter and ticket agent when it is your turn.

Smile and say to the agent, "Hello. I see there is an earlier flight leaving in 'X' amount of minutes. Are there any available seats on it?"

Listen to her response. Respond to an affirmative response by saying, "Would it be possible for me to receive a confirmed seat on the flight or fly standby? I would appreciate it so much." Keep smiling.

Prepare your luggage tags as she works on the computer. Listen to her answer and respond, "Yes. I will take that seat. The aisle is fine. I really appreciate your assistance. You have been a tremendous help." Reach for your ticket and walk away with a smile.

Respond to a negative response with a polite, "Thank you for your assistance. I did so hope to get home earlier." Smile and accept your tickets.

Respond to a request for fees by smiling and looking her in the eye as you say, "Is there anyway these fees can be waived? I rarely travel and hadn't budgeted for this fee. Besides, by my flying earlier, I am filling an empty seat on the outgoing flight plus leaving time for you to sell my old seat. Can you waive the fee as a one-time courtesy?"

Pull out your credit card and hand it to her if the response is no. Sign the receipt and accept your tickets.
