How to Change a Plane Ticket

When travel plans change, travelers are faced with the prospect of contacting airlines to change or cancel flights. Some customers merely seek to change their flight time, while others need to reschedule their flight to another day or week. Each airline has its own policy regarding changed flights and tickets. Most airlines charge a fee for changing flights and/or entire travel itineraries. However, airlines can usually accommodate travelers by rescheduling them to more convenient flights, provided that there are available seats on the desired new flights.

Instructions

    • 1

Review your ticket and travel reservation. Check to see if there is any indication of how you can change your ticket, and whether there are any fees associated with changing it. Some airlines offer customers the option of purchasing either a refundable or a non-refundable plane ticket. These airlines, including Delta Airlines, allow customers to change refundable plane tickets at no cost if there are available seats on the new flight and the new flight is not more expensive than the original flight.

    • 2

Find your confirmation number. When you booked your plane ticket, you were likely issued a confirmation or reservation number by your airline. When you contact your airline to change your flight, you will need to provide the confirmation number so that the airline can quickly access your reservation information.

    • 3

Contact your airline. Most airlines require that you telephone them or speak to one of their representatives in person to change your ticket. You can speak to an airline representative in person by visiting one of the airlines' kiosks or desks at your local airport (provided that the airline that issued your ticket flies into your local airport). You can also navigate to your particular airline's website to locate contact information for that airline. Provide your name and confirmation number when you speak to an airline representative.

    • 4

Discuss with the airline representative what you would like to do. If you would like to fly to your destination at a different time on the day that you were scheduled to fly, speak to the representative about whether there is another flight that day with available seats. If you would like to fly on another day at a specific time, let the representative know. The representative will check flight availability and explain your options for rescheduling. He or she will also let you know if there will be a cost associated with changing your plane ticket.

    • 5

Confirm a new flight time and day, if applicable. The representative will reschedule you on a new flight. He or she will make sure that the new flight itinerary is acceptable to you before the new reservation is booked and confirmed.

    • 6

Pay any fees associated with changing your plane ticket.
