Read the rules and restrictions. For many airlines, changing the return portion of the ticket will cost you between $50 and $100. If you need to change the front portion of the ticket, the airline considers this rebooking the ticket. Most airlines will charge you the price of the ticket PLUS a change fee between $50 and $100. This information is valid for American, Delta, Jet Blue, US Airways, United, Continental, Northwest and many other carriers.

Call the airline for information or log onto the airlines website for their contact information. Follow the prompts appropriate for the travel that you booked. If you are flying on "miles" or award travel, you will have to go through that department.

Explain your situation, give the ticket confirmation number, verify identity if required and then inform the agent of the times and places of your desired ticket changes. Offer flying to different airports or flying at odd times; the agent may be able to find a cheaper fare. If the new price plus penalty is still less than the old price, the airline will send you a voucher for the difference, good for use for one year from the date you purchased the original ticket.

Pick a new flight or tell the agent where the voucher can be sent. Then if you owe additional money, provide your credit card information.
