How to Change an E-Ticket

E-tickets, or electronic tickets, are electronic transactions for a reservation and ticket with an airline. This form of ticketing has gradually replaced paper tickets. Passengers with e-tickets generally only require their name, reservation code and identification to check in and travel. E-tickets also give travelers the convenience of being able to check in for flights online or use self-service kiosks at the airport. Since e-tickets are issued using a central reservations system, making itinerary changes is easy and can be done by calling the airline or using its website.

Instructions

    • 1

Confirm that your e-ticket fare is eligible to be changes. The ability to make changes depends on the fare paid. Some fares, such as an airline's lowest available fare class or category, do not permit changes.

    • 2

If you bought your ticket directly from the airline, visit its website and log on to retrieve your booking. This can usually be done by supplying the booking confirmation or reservation number, passenger name and/or credit card details. If you did not buy the ticket directly from the airline's website, call the airline's reservation number or your travel/booking agent.

    • 3

Search for available alternate flights. After retrieving your booking on the airline's website, you will be able to search for alternate flights. Generally, you will also be able to see how much it will cost to change your flight.

    • 4

Unless you bought a refundable ticket, you must pay any applicable change fees. Some airlines also permit name changes, which also require the payment of a fee in most cases.

    • 5

Print your revised itinerary for your records. It will contain your confirmation or reservation number and your ticket number, which is required for online check-in or when using self-service kiosks to check in at the airport.
