How to Cancel an Airline Ticket

The process of canceling an airline ticket is different for every outlet. If you are canceling far enough in advance, you may be able to get a refund on your ticket, but if you are canceling at the last minute, you may only be able to use some of the ticket's price as credit for your next flight on the same airline.

Things You'll Need

  • Reservation number
  • Credit card information
  • Phone

Instructions

    • 1

Gather pertinent information including your flight reservation number, flight number, credit card information and the dates you are traveling.

    • 2

Call the outlet you booking your ticket with. This includes a travel agent, an online travel agent or an airline.

    • 3

Inform the customer service representative that you need to cancel your ticket. You will need to give them your credit card information as well as your name and reservation number.

    • 4

Ask the customer service representative about their cancellation policy and if they offer any refunds. Most airlines do not offer any refunds unless you are an elite traveler, have purchased a refundable ticket or are traveling business class. Some outlets will offer partial refunds or credit that has to be used within a certain time. Be sure to write down and remember any stipulations to receiving credit or partial refunds.
