How to Buy an International Air Ticket

Before you purchase international airline tickets you should make sure you already have or have applied for a valid U.S. passport, which is a requirement for all international flights. Booking an international airline ticket is just as simple as booking a domestic airline ticket. Many airlines that fly domestically don't fly internationally, however, so your favorite airline might not offer flights to your international destination--but plenty of other airlines will.

Instructions

    • 1

Book your international flight by comparing flights and fares on a travel website. Enter your departure city, arrival city, dates of travel and the number of passengers traveling with you. View the results, which will appear for multiple airlines all in the same search. Choose your flight from the available list, choose your seats and enter your name, billing information and contact information. Review your purchase before submitting it and keep the confirmation page for your records.

Purchase an international airline ticket directly from the airline you wish to travel on. Call the airline directly to book your ticket. Provide your travel dates, destination city and your credit card number. Keep your confirmation number for your records.

    • 3

Buy your international airline ticket on your airline's website site. Provide the same information in Steps 1 and 2 and view your search results. Choose the time of your departure, whether you want to travel on a flight with layovers--which sometimes is the only option--and the seats you want to sit in. Provide your payment information, billing address, contact information and confirm your booking.

Visit the airline ticket counter at your local airport. Provide your travel information to the airline representative and take home your boarding pass right then and there.
