Do your research. Search for your flight on multiple airlines. Use travel sites such as Expedia or Travelocity, which allow you to enter your flight information before supplying results for multiple airlines. Check with the airlines directly. Sometimes booking through a travel site is less expensive but sometimes they add fees to their flights that the airline itself does not.
Be flexible if your travel plans allow. Departing just one day earlier or later could change the price of your flight dramatically. For example, booking a flight from Orlando to JFK in New York City on a Friday with a return date of Sunday cost $300 when doing research. When the departure date was changed to Thursday, the price dropped nearly $100.
Change your airport. Sometimes when searching for airfares, flying into a different nearby airport drastically decreases the cost of the airfare.
Book your flight early. MSN Money writers state that airfare prices tend to be at their lowest point several months prior to travel. The closer you get to your departure date, the more the price for tickets increases due to supply and demand.
Travel during your destination's off-season. A little research will determine when your destination's busy season is. Traveling during the off-season decreases the cost of airfare as well as hotels and other activities.
