How to Pack for the Airport

Traveling is stressful enough as it is without adding the packing process to the equation. With airports charging higher rates for extra packages and checked bags, packing efficiency is more important than ever. You will save a lot of money if you are able to reduce two pieces of luggage down to one or can reduce your baggage contents entirely into a carry-on. Packing for the airport involves prioritizing what your needs are and leaving unnecessary items at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick suitcases designed to fit in overhead compartments and that can be easily transported. Many modern luggage pieces have wheels and an extendable handle so you can move quickly during transport. Once you have your bags selected, you'll know how much space you have with which to work. You'll save time and money by reducing your luggage to a carry-on and a laptop case, if possible.

    • 2

Make a list of everything you must take with you followed by a list of things that you'd prefer to take if you can fit them. This helps you focus on the most vital items first.

    • 3

Place everything you have on your list on or around your bed with your luggage. This helps you visualize how much more you have to fit in the suitcase at any given time.

    • 4

Stuff your shoes with pairs of socks and then slide each shoe into a thin canvas or plastic bag. Place it in the suitcase. This ensures the shoes won't get your clothes dirty. If you can get by with just the shoes you'll be wearing, don't bother packing extra pairs to save yourself room and weight.

    • 5

Stack shirts on top of each each other and then roll them up from the bottom to the top. This creates a roll of clothing that will take up less space than placing each piece individually in the suitcase. Choose wrinkle-resistant clothing whenever possible.

    • 6

Place pants together and roll them up as well. They may get slightly wrinkled in transport but you can hang them up or iron them once you get to your destination. If you have numerous sets, make multiple rolls and place them next to each other in rows, stacking each row on top of each other until you're finished.

    • 7

Store underwear in a small cloth bag so you can find it easily and also stuff it into a small space in the suitcase.

    • 8

Place your purse near the top of your carry-on if you will be taking one. It will make the trip through the airport quicker than carrying it since it won't need to be scanned separately.

    • 9

Place any liquids into 3 oz., clear-plastic containers that are clearly labeled with the contents. Each of these containers should be stored in a single, sealed plastic bag that can be removed quickly upon luggage inspection.

    • 10

Wear your heaviest clothing when going to the airport since it would take up the most room in your luggage. You can change out of it once you get to your destination.
