Shop around and see if you can find a flight where you won't have to change planes. If that isn't possible, check the locations where you can make a connecting flight. Examine the times for the connecting flights and what you may have to do in order to make the plane.
Look at the itineraries of the connecting flight. If your plane arrives at 2:00 PM and the connecting flight takes off at 2:30, you need to know if you can even make it. If you have to collect your luggage, go through customs and check your luggage in again, you may want to make the connecting flight later.
Find a map of the airport you are going to have to change planes at to see what kind of accommodations it has. Rather than taking the 2:30 flight, you may want to take a 4:00 flight so you're sure you have plenty of time and not miss your connecting flight. Airports usually have restaurants and other things for you to do to pass the time.
Pack some things in your carry-on to keep you busy while you are waiting for your connecting flight. Puzzle books, books to read, CDs and a CD player, a MP3 or iPod are all things that can help you pass the time until it's time for your connecting flight.
Talk to the airlines if they have made the connecting flight plans. If it seems to be too short a time between flights, find out what recourse is open to you if you miss the connecting flight.
