Anticipate what you will want to eat. For an early morning flight, you may want to pack fresh fruit and a protein. Think about where you are going, when you'll get there and how hungry you'll be.
For protein:
hard boiled egg (carry salt and pepper in a foil packet)
cubed cheese
cubed raw firm tofu
drinkable yogurt or kefir (drink before passing through security checkpoint)
For vegetables:
raw turnip slices
jicama slices
raw Jerusalem artichoke chunks
radishes
carrot sticks
cucumber sticks
celery sticks
raw broccoli florets
For fruit:
mandarins
apple slices
Kiwi chunks
cherry tomatoes
strawberries
grapes
pineapple chunks
For the sweet tooth:
fresh dates stuffed with almond butter
raisins mixed with walnuts
green drink made with one part fresh greens to three parts fruit (such as three collard leaves, two apples, two oranges and a lime blended in a high-speed blender) to drink before passing through security checkpoint
When packing the snacks, make them easy to eat. Take the grapes off the stem and pack them in a container. Eating fruit and vegetable pieces from a container is easier and tastier than pulling them from a bag. Wrap the egg in a paper towel that you can use as a place mat. Squeeze lemon on fruit that may oxidize and brown, such as apple slices. Cut small slices that can be popped easily into your mouth. Make sure anything liquid is in a well-sealed container such as a Mason jar with a tight lid. Also put liquids in a sealable plastic bag. Remember that liquids must be consumed before passing through the security checkpoint.
Bring an empty water bottle through the security checkpoint and fill it from a fountain in the terminal.
