How to Pack for a Two-Week Trip

Many people love to travel but do not love packing for their trip quite as much. This sometimes stressful task can be made easier when you organize yourself before you even open a suitcase.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a checklist of all of the items you plan to bring with you on your two-week trip. This can include clothing, toiletries, cameras, electronics and snacks. Writing everything down can make the gathering process easier.

    • 2

Inform yourself about your accommodations before you pack. If you are staying with relatives or at a hotel with laundry facilities, for example, you may not need to bring a full two-weeks' worth of outfit changes.

    • 3

Check the weather for your vacation destination. Weather.com provides weather reports for up to 10 days and serves cities throughout the world (see Resources). Knowing the predicted temperatures will help you determine if you will need to pack sweaters or bathing suits.

    • 4

Consider your method of transportation as you begin to pack. If you are driving, you most likely will have more space for multiple bags. Airlines may limit both the number of bags you can bring as well as the size or weight of each bag.

    • 5

Fill zip-top plastic bags with travel-sized toiletries. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) limits airline passengers to filling a 1 qt. plastic bag with items that are 3 oz. or less (see Resources). You may not have enough supplies to last your entire two weeks but you can buy more in transit. Even if you are driving on your trip, consider packing light and buying more toiletries when you arrive to save space

    • 6

Count out the clothing items you will need for your trip. If you will not have a chance to do laundry, make sure you have 15 pairs of underwear for each person traveling (the 15th pair is extra), four to five pairs of pants or skirts and a shirt for every day you are gone.

    • 7

Pack similar things together. Pack all clothing for your children in one bag and your own clothing in another so you will know exactly where everything is located. Designate one box or bag for toys and books that can be easily handled by your children in an airport if you are flying during your 2 week trip.

    • 8

Cross off each item on your checklist as you pack it to avoid second-guessing yourself when you have finished packing.
