Be prepared for a range of temperatures and climates. Dress for comfort rather than style but keep decorum in mind. Think casual but remember to dress respectfully when visiting shrines.
Take along long- and short-sleeved shirts, a few sweaters and a jacket that can be layered. Longer shorts for men and women are acceptable in the summer except when visiting religious shrines. Include a raincoat and umbrella except for winter travel.
Pack at least one dress shirt and sports jacket for men and a dress or pantsuit for women for dressier and more formal occasions. Opt for sturdy walking shoes that are comfortable and broken in before setting out on the trip. Choose closed toed shoes over sandals.
Include personal toiletries, common over-the-counter medications and feminine hygiene products, which are often hard to come by in many areas of china. Bring cold and allergy medications and antacids, anti-diarrheal and digestive medications. Remember to pack sunscreen, lotion, throat lozenges, chewing gum, mints and other items that are not readily available. Take along a back up pair of contacts or prescription eyeglasses.
Collect partial rolls of toilet paper at home for a few weeks before the trip. Take them along to China and make sure everyone has one in a fanny pack when sightseeing as public facilities do not offer toilet paper.
Consult a physician before leaving. Acquire necessary prescriptions and have them filled before departing. Pack each prescription medications in the properly labeled bottles provided by the pharmacy.
Purchase an English language guidebook before leaving on the trip. Purchase slide film, which is not easy to find throughout China. Use a digital camera and take along extra memory sticks. Remember to include extra batteries.
