Where is south ossettia?

South Ossetia (Ossetian: Хуссар Ирыстон, romanized: Khussar Iryston; Georgian: სამხრეთ ოსეთი, romanized: samkhret' oset'i) is a de facto independent state in the South Caucasus region. It is recognised as an independent state by Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Nauru, while the vast majority of other United Nations member states consider it part of Georgia.

South Ossetia covers a majority of the territory of the former South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast, an autonomous oblast of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic, established in 1922. Following the Georgian–Ossetian conflict in the early 1990s, South Ossetia declared independence in 1991. However, the Georgian central government did not recognise the declaration and considered the region a breakaway province.

Another conflict erupted between Georgia and South Ossetia in August 2008, resulting in Russian military intervention. In the aftermath, Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, another breakaway province of Georgia.

The recognition was condemned by most countries, which continue to consider South Ossetia a part of Georgia. The issue of South Ossetia's status remains unresolved, with ongoing tensions between Georgia and Russia.
