List of Plants in a Rainforest

Rainforests are among the most diverse ecosystems in the world. Most of the world's rainforests are located in Central and South America, Central Africa and Southeast Asia. There are many species in this ecosystem which have yet to be discovered or documented. Warm, humid conditions with frequent rain and extremely rich soil allow this environment to support a wide variety of plants and animals.
  1. Passionflower

    • The passionflower, scientific name Passiflora suberosa, is a climbing vine commonly found in tropical regions such as the rainforest. It can grow to lengths of up to 8 feet, and as a result, should have plenty of space in a garden or home landscape setting. It prefers full sun to partial shade. As a rainforest plant, the passionflower has herbaceous evergreen foliage and blooms year round with a display of chartreuse flowers. This plant is highly attractive to birds, bees and butterflies. It demands strongly acidic to alkaline soil ranging in pH from 5.1 to 8.5. Parts of this plant are harmful to humans and some animals if ingested, especially the seeds.

    Orchid

    • The scientific name for the orchid is Orchidaceae Spathoglottis. It is a tropical perennial which thrives in a rainforest setting. It prefers light shade, as its natural habitat is beneath a thick canopy of trees. The foliage is waxy and veined and the plant blooms repeatedly throughout the year, displaying pink, purple, white or blue flowers, depending on the particular variety. It has average watering needs and overwatering can prove detrimental to the health of the plant. The orchid requires soil ranging from mildly acidic to neutral with a pH of 6.1 to 7.5. The best method of propagation for this plant is either by dividing rhizomes, tubers, corms or bulbs, or by germinating seeds in vitro in a medium such as gelatin or agar.

    Bromeliad

    • The bromeliad is a tropical succulent flower that thrives in the rainforest ecosystem. This flower is a popular choice for home gardens outside of the rainforest as it can survive in the southern United States, and has a fairly high tolerance for drought conditions. The bromeliad is a monocarpic plant, meaning it flowers once during its lifespan before dying. For this reason it takes several years for the plant to reach flowering size. The flower is purple with chartreuse or yellow leathery-textured foliage. The leaves can be very sharp at the edges, so gloves are recommended when handling or repotting this plant. It can tolerate full sun exposure as well as light shade, and requires mildly acidic to mildly alkaline soil with a pH between 6.1 and 7.8.
