Cordoba, Argentina Restaurants

Argentina's second largest city is home to seven universities, impressive Jesuit churches, and a vibrant nightlife. Although it's much smaller than Buenos Aires, great restaurants abound in Cordoba, and you'll find everything from juicy 12-ounce steaks to traditional stews and even some ethnic Chinese, Arabic and Mexican restaurants. If you're just arriving in town, your best bet is to ask the locals where they like to eat. The people from Cordoba are known for being exceptionally friendly and will point you in the right direction of a great local eatery. Here are some good options to get you started.
  1. Beto's

    • This small fast food chain has over half a dozen locations around the city of Cordoba and the outlying suburbs. Started by a group of university students who decided to open a restaurant to pay for their studies, Beto's caters to a mostly student crowd. It's a great place to meet locals. The menu is standard Argentine fare, including lomo (skirt steak) sandwiches, grilled sausages, spare ribs and several types of empanadas, a typical Argentine meat pastry that's sufficiently greasy and delicious. Beto's also offers a wide selection of Argentine-style pizzas topped with provolone, prosciutto, pumpkin, pineapple, hearts of palm, ham or blue cheese.

    Las Tinajas

    • This massive dining space is Argentina's largest parrilla libre or all-you-can-eat buffet. The tacky waterfall, fake jungle plants, and cheap gold paneling may be a bit much for some, by the overall value you get for such a wide selection and large quantity of food is undeniable. All the Argentine classics are here (empanadas, breaded fried steak, pizza) and any hungry diner can appreciate the huge charcoal grill serving select cuts of top quality Argentine beef, chicken, and lamb. Las Tinajas also surprises with a number of more international dishes, including salmon quiche, venison, orange and pistachio quinoa, and apple strudel. Many Asian-influenced side dishes are also available, including chop suey, chicken fried rice and lo mein noodles.

    Uxmal

    • This Tex-Mex style Mexican eatery may make some purists rolls their eyes, but for those who enjoy large helpings of tacos, fajitas, quesadillas and nachos, this is the place to be. Located in downtown Cordoba on the city's main drag Avenida San Juan, Uxmal is a popular hangout among university students looking for a break from standard Argentine fare. In addition to classic Tex-Mex platters like beef enchiladas and chicken quesadillas, Uxmal has a number of meat-heavy special concoctions like chupacabras (beef, chicken, and pork topped with cheese, onions, and mushrooms), taconazo (a meat, chicken, and vegetable dish served with tortillas made for two), and me vale madre! (beef, chicken, bacon, green onions and tomato sautéed in cheese sauce).
