How to Travel to Machu Picchu in Peru

Machu Picchu should be high on the must-see list of any world traveler. In 2007, the lost city of the Incas was designated one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The city is in the Peruvian Andes and entertains so many visitors a year that the government has at times restricted the number of guests. At one point, only 2,500 people per day were allowed inside the ruins. The government suggests people buy admission tickets as early as possible.

Other attractions within Machu Picchu are the semicircular Temple of the Sun where solar observations were performed, and the Intiwatana Pyramid. Discoverer Hiram Bingham named it Intiwatana, which means "the place to which the sun is tied." He believed, mistakenly, that the pyramid was used as a sundial.
