Where Do Yemenis Live? Not Mostly in the West
Yemen's Population Distribution: Concentrated in the Highlands, Not the West
The premise "most people live in the West of Yemen" is **incorrect**. Yemen's population is heavily concentrated in the **western highlands and central mountains**, not the coastal west (Tihama).
Actual Population Centers (2024 est. ~35M)
- Sana'a (Capital) + Governorate: ~4–5M. **Central highlands (2,200–2,300 m).**
- Taiz (Governorate & City): ~3.5M. **Southwestern highlands** (mountains, not coast).
- Ibb Governorate: ~3.5M. **Central highlands** (green, terraced, dense).
- Hodeidah (Al Hudaydah) Governorate: ~3M. **Coastal Tihama plain (WEST)** — but much population in inland districts (Bajil, Zabid) or city. Still, significant coastal population.
- Hajjah Governorate: ~2.5M. **Northwestern highlands/foothills**.
- Dhamar Governorate: ~2.5M. **Central highlands** (between Sana'a & Ibb).
- Aden (City + Governorate): ~1M. **Southern port city** (former capital of South Yemen).
- Amran, Al Bayda, Lahj, Abyan, Marib, Al Mahwit, Raymah, Sa'dah, Al Jawf, Al Mahrah, Socotra.
Why the Highlands?
- Rainfall: Orographic lift on western mountain slopes → 600–1,500 mm/yr. Supports agriculture (coffee, qat, grapes, cereals, terraces).
- Temperature: Moderate (15–25°C). Tihama coast: brutal heat (35–45°C), humidity, malaria, scarce water.
- Water: Springs, wadis, groundwater recharge in mountains. Coastal aquifers saline/overdrawn.
- Health: Lower malaria, fewer vector-borne diseases at altitude.
- History: Centuries of settlement in defensible, fertile highlands (Zaydi imamate core).
The "West" (Tihama Coastal Plain)
- Narrow (20–50 km), hot, arid/semi-arid.
- Population in **Hodeidah city** (port, ~600k), **Midi, Khawkhah, Mocha** (historic coffee port), and agricultural zones near wadi mouths (Wadi Mawr, Wadi Siham, Wadi Zabid) with spate irrigation.
- **Not** the majority.
Conflict Impact
War (since 2014) caused massive displacement: ~4.5M IDPs. Many fled *from* conflict zones (Taiz, Hodeidah, Hajjah, Marib) *to* relatively safer areas (Sana'a, Ibb, Dhamar, Aden), further concentrating highland/urban populations.
