How to Update My RV

Having a recreational vehicle (RV) is not a whole lot different than owning a second home or condo for vacation purposes. When traveling in an RV, you want the same comforts and conveniences found in homes and hotels. Making renovations and updates to your RV should involve hitting all of the key components such as the sleeping area, the kitchen and the main cabin, where the driver sits. Properly outfitting an RV can turn it into accommodations that can go up against even the most lavish four-star resort.

Assess the current condition of your RV. Take digital pictures of all areas and make a list of what your RV currently contains. Write next to all items whether they need replaced, repaired or are in good enough condition to remain in your RV. Make sure to do this for all elements including kitchen, living and bathroom areas.

    • 2

Decide which areas you will update first. Make the process of determining what will be updated by working from the front of the RV back, starting with the main cabin. Items that could be updated including chair upholstery, carpet, radio, navigation system and storage areas. For example, if you make long trips in your RV you may opt for a satellite radio system or integrated navigation device with touch screen functionality. Consider making your RV handicap accessible to accommodate either yourself or others should the need ever arise.

    • 3

Review the photos and list you created for the kitchen area. Decide if you need to update items such as cabinets, pantry or storage areas, appliances, dishes, glassware, refrigerator, dining room eating space or utensils. Keep green initiatives in mind for the kitchen area and consider adding compost bins and recycling centers.

    • 4

Review the main living and sleeping areas. Determine if you will be updating items including couches, chairs, cushions, mattresses, linens and entertainment electronics. Consider updating to an LCD or plasma television mounted on the wall to save space. Consider moving to wireless systems for speakers and Internet access to save additional space.

    • 5

Assess the bathroom area and determine whether now fixtures, shower heads, toilets or cabinets are required. Keep cost and installation fees in mind when making decisions. Think about potentially adding solar panels to your RV for heating water to lower costs and to make your RV more energy efficient.

    • 6

Read through and put potential costs next to all items you have determined will be upgraded. Note potential installation costs associated with larger items such as cabinets, carpet and plumbing fixtures. Add all costs up to determine the total amount to use a guide to determine if the project is feasible from a budget perspective.

Start shopping for all items once you have determined that you can afford the project. Keep color schemes and decor styles in mind.
