Lay out your travel clothing and other miscellaneous trip items, and decide on the amount of weight that you want to carry. In addition, think about your travel habits. If you need fast access to certain items, set those items aside from any that you only plan to access or unpack at your destination.
Choose sizes and styles of packing cubes, if you don't own packing cubes. Packing "cube" styles not only include small, medium and large rectangular prism-like shapes, but also narrow end pocket and tube shapes as well as backpack and carry-on styles with handles or straps.
Prepare your packing cubes by simply unfolding each and unzipping a sidewall or flap to open.
Store dress shirts, or any that wrinkle easily, in a cube to reduce the amount of wrinkles or fold marks upon arrival at your destination. Fold and roll each shirt and lay the rolled shirts tightly side-by-side in the cube. When finished, set the cube aside and organize the next set of clothing items. Roll and pack socks or underclothing in a small or medium cube or, if travelling lightly, in a packing cube tube.
Pack your miscellaneous trip items in separate small cubes that you can quickly pull from luggage. For example, fill one packing cube with toiletry, beauty items and/or medicine. Fill another with laptop or phone accessories such as chargers or cables. If you want a blanket on hand, roll a blanket and place it in a tube or pocket. When you place the tube or pocket in your luggage, store it along a sidewall so you can quickly remove it without completely opening the luggage flap.
Place dirty laundry in a packing cube while travelling to protect clean items in other cubes or inside luggage from dirt or odors.
Use your packing cubes after travel to organize clothing drawers or closets in your home. Separate sock and undergarments in a drawer with a large packing cube that features a divider. Organize winter sweaters and cold weather gear in packing cubes and store in a closet between seasons.
