Gather all necessary equipment. Before you load the first item onto the rental truck, take a quick inventory and make sure you have the needed supplies. This includes a dolly to lift heavy items such as appliances (it helps to have dollies in multiple sizes). Also, grab a few moving blankets and ropes to protect and secure fragile items. Place moving blankets on the floor of the rental truck before loading the first item.
Bring large and heavy items onto the truck. Items such as refrigerators, couches, stoves, dressers, washing machines and dryers should be loaded onto the rental truck first. Place these items along the back wall of the truck. Heavy and large items need to remain in an evenly balanced upright position.
Place long items against the side wall. Rather than placing mattresses, tables, mirrors and box springs in front of the heavy items, situate these items along the side wall of the truck. This keeps the space in front of the heavy items open, and you can use this space to store smaller items and boxes.
Load boxes onto the truck. After loading non-boxed items onto the truck, it's time to load the boxes. Stack light boxes on top of the heavy items. However, place heavier and larger boxes directly in front of appliances and furniture that are situated along the back wall. Next, load light boxes onto the rental truck. Make use of every available space. Stack light boxes on top of each other, or place boxes underneath tables and chairs.
Use rope to secure items. If the rental truck isn't filled to capacity, boxes and other items may shift during the drive. Secure items to the side of the rental truck with rope or a cargo net.
