Locate and read the materials that came with your car in regards to its cargo load capacity. It is important that you don't try to overpack your vehicle. This could cause damage to the vehicle and could make driving the car more hazardous. Extra weight on any vehicle can make turning and stopping more dangerous.
Install a rack to the roof of your car if you have one available so that you will have a base to stack things on. The dealership where you purchased your car should be able to offer a rack made for the vehicle. Some auto parts stores, sports stores and aftermarket car parts stores may also have a suitable rack.
Attach all items to the car in a secure manner. Laws vary by state, but do not have items sticking too far over the sides of the car. These items could accidentally make contact with other cars on the road, creating dangerous situations.
Distribute the weight as evenly as possible on your vehicle. Build a base with heavier items on the bottom and lighter items on the top. Wrap ropes over the lighter items to secure them to the heavier items. Secure all sides of the load.
Drive cautiously and be prepared for shifting that can take place. Drive your car to a safe place on the side of the road periodically to make sure that your items are still in place. Tighten things up as necessary.
