How to Ship a Vehicle Cross-Country

If you are moving or sold a car online and need to ship a vehicle across the country, consider using an auto-shipping company. Handing over the keys to your car can be an unsettling prospect, which is why thorough research and the proper preparation are essential. When you’ve covered all the bases and find a company you are confident with, shipping your vehicle is one less thing to worry about.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact several auto-shipping companies for quotes, available insurance and length of time from pickup to drop-off. Depending on how far you need the vehicle transported, some companies require anywhere from two days to two weeks to make arrangements. Find out whether they have door-to-door pickup and delivery. Ask how they ship the car--rail or flat-bed truck.

Clean your vehicle on the outside and inside. Take off any removable items on the outside such as aftermarket spoilers, bras or special lights. Remove all personal items from the vehicle, including those in the trunk. Carrier regulations do not allow for the shipment of personal items in the vehicle. Also, too much weight in the vehicle while it is being transported can damage the underside of your vehicle. Make sure there is about a quarter of a tank of gas or less.

    • 3

Watch the mover during the initial inspection. Do not sign the bill of landing unless you agree that the mover has accurately described the condition of your vehicle.

    • 4

Inspect the vehicle when you pick it up. Notice whether there is any damage to the vehicle not documented during the initial inspection.
