How to Ship a Car to Pakistan

In this modern age of transportation logistics, you can ship most anything to anywhere. This includes shipping a car to Pakistan. At this time, only Pakistani nationals and diplomats may ship vehicles into the country. If you fall into one of these categories, with some research and preparation shipping a vehicle can be a relatively painless process; once it's in the shipper's hands, there's little left to do on your part. The shipping company will generally take care of customs documentation, but be familiar with the taxes, tariffs and fees charged by the Pakistani government for the importation of a vehicle. Otherwise, it's just a matter of being patient for a delivery that can take anywhere from weeks to months depending on the shipper and level of service you choose.

Prepare your vehicle to be shipped. Remove any non-fixtures such as ski racks. The fuel tank should be no more than one-quarter full. Disable your car alarm and lower any antennae on the vehicle. Regardless of the shipping method, land or sea, damage to your car is possible. Depending on your point of origin, you may be able to send your car to Pakistan on the ground. You can choose to send your car in a closed, individual container or you can select a roll-on/roll-off (RO/RO) option where your car is driven on to the transport vehicle and then driven off at the end. Door-to-door delivery will likely require a combination of land and sea transportation.

Get a cost estimate from shipping companies. It is important to shop around when it comes to car shipping companies. Different companies will have different payment policies (down payments or paying up front, for example). Charges will also vary depending on the size or type of your vehicle, pick-up location and arrival location. Quotes are generally free. Shipping International and Ship My Vehicle both offer transportation services to Pakistan and can provide free price quotes.

Obtain shipping insurance for your vehicle. Several insurance options are available for shipping your car by sea and for shipping over land. Most insurers will require a full inspection of your vehicle prior to departure. Many companies will also require that you empty your vehicle to avoid damage from loose items during transit. Consult your own insurance agent to determine the type of coverage you will need for your particular circumstances. In the alternative, most shipping companies also offer the necessary insurance as part of their services. Understand all of the shipping company's insurance terms before signing anything; discuss insurance as part of the quote process.

Pay a 15-percent tax on your car, plus customs duties. There are a number of specific taxes based on value and/or engine capacity that will also determine taxes on importing your vehicle. The rules for calculating the tax can be found on the Pakistan Board of Revenue website.
