How to Ship a Car to Peru

Peru has been limiting the amount of used cars entering its borders because of the country's increasing concern about dirty vehicles, gas emissions and other vehicle pollution. Therefore, when shipping your car to Peru, you should be careful and cautious about the condition and age of your car. If your car clears Peru's vehicle restrictions, however, the rest of the process should be relatively simple.

Check the age and mileage of your car before attempting to ship it to Peru. By Peru law, you cannot import a car that is older than five years and has been driven more than 80,000 kilometers (49,709) miles.

Find a global vehicle-shipping company that will ship your car to Peru. A quick Internet search will reveal a number of options; you may also want to consult your phone book to see if you have a global vehicle-transport company in your area.

Contact the shipping company of your choice and place an order. To complete your order, the company will need to know the year, make and model of your car; its license plate number and VIN (Vehicle Identification Number); the original title of the car; the car's bill of sale; your personal contact information; and the information of the destination port. Most companies also require full payment before shipping your car.

Select the way you would prefer for your vehicle to be shipped. There are three ways you can have your car sent to Peru, and many companies offer all three: roll-on and roll-off shipping; consolidation in a 40-foot-high cube container; and an exclusive container. Roll-on and roll-off shipping is where the car is transported by a specially designed steamship that contains a giant multitiered parking lot. Consolidating your car in a high cube container means that your car is loaded with two or three other cars in a large container for shipping. Your car is placed alone in a small container if you select exclusive container shipping.

Prep your car for the shipping company to pick it up by removing all items from your car. Most companies will pick up your car from your home; sometimes, however, you need to drive your car to the outgoing port. The company will then guide your car through the travel process until it reaches the destination port. After reaching the destination port and unloading your car, the shipping company will contact you so that you can pick your car up.
