Regulations on the Use of Golf Carts in Florida

The state of Florida defines a golf cart as “a motor vehicle designed and manufactured for operation on a golf course for sporting or recreational purposes.” Yet, in Florida golf carts are not just used on the golf course. You can find them on public roadways and neighborhood streets. Golf carts are an inexpensive form of transportation that is fun to drive if you follow the rules and regulations regarding them in Florida.
  1. License and Registration

    • The state of Florida does not require a license to drive a golf cart, but the local government can require a license or permit. However, you must be at least 14 years old to legally operate a golf cart. You also do not need to register the vehicle. Yet, the local government may require that it be inspected. The state of Florida does not require insurance on a golf cart either, but the local government may require it.

    Road Regulations

    • A golf cart can only be driven on a local or county road that has been approved for golf carts. A golf cart cannot be driven on a state road and you can only cross a state road at approved crossings for golf carts that are posted. You cannot drive a golf cart on the sidewalk, and the posted speed limit has to be 30 miles per hour or lower to drive them on approved streets. The golf cart can only be driven between sunrise and sunset, unless the local government has approved it for night use. In order for a golf cart to be approved for night use, it must have a windshield, reflectors, turn signals, headlights and brake lights.

    Daylight Driving Regulations

    • In order to drive your golf cart on approved roads during the daylight your golf cart must have the following: reliable brakes, reliable steering, safe tires, a rearview mirror and front and back red reflectors. The local government can issue stricter requirements, so you should definitely check with them before driving your golf cart on the streets. You must follow all local and state traffic laws when operating your golf cart, because you can receive a ticket or a citation.
