Check the New Jersey turnpike site for discount options. Buy an E-Z pass if you will use the turnpike on a regular basis. The pass will save money on the tool booths, and there are marked lanes for E-Z pass holders. In 2010, 75 percent of all tolls on the turnpike went through E-Z lanes. Discounts are also available for senior citizens and green vehicles.
Check the travel time for more discounts. The tolls are higher during peak hours of 7 to 9 a.m. and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Enter the turnpike at any non E-Z pass gate if you don't have an E-Z pass.
Give the toll collector the ticket at the end of the trip. If you don't have the full amount of the toll, the collector can take a partial payment, or issue a no-fund receipt. You will be billed by mail for the rest of the toll. Collect your change, pull off slowly, and follow the signs to the exit.
