How to Rent an RV in New Jersey

Renting a recreational vehicle, or RV, is an increasingly popular way to take a vacation. According to the Recreational Vehicle Rental Association, vacationing in an RV can save travelers more than 50 percent over other types of vacations. RV camps around the country offer drivers and passengers a place to stay for a unique, and often inexpensive, experience. There are several locations in New Jersey that provide RVs for rent. Each has a variety of rental options. Many offer additional discounts at partnering businesses like Kampgrounds of America campgrounds.

Instructions

    • 1

Research the type of RV you want to rent. Look at RV rental websites or visit a site and ask for a tour of the available models. Have an idea of what you are looking for regarding sleeping room and amenities. If you plan on towing a car, boat or trailer, measure the length before you look for an RV; New Jersey law restricts towing on RVs to a combined length of 62-feet.

    • 2

Check RV rates and availability online. Similar to car rentals companies, many RV rental businesses have websites where customers can use their expected dates of travel as a starting point to compare prices and models. The most popular, and biggest, national RV rental company is Cruise America. They have five locations in New Jersey. Other rental companies in New Jersey include: Road Bear RV in Middletown; El Monte RV in Linden; and 84 RV Rentals and Service in Sussex.

Review the company's rental policies. Not all the prices listed on the website are the final total of what you will pay. Check the fine print. Some companies, for example, charge for mileage. Others have an additional cost if you would like the kitchen stocked with cookware. Companies may also have certain restrictions on travel which limit use to in-state only or forbid use in areas with unpaved roads or other hazardous conditions.

Make a reservation. A rental costs anywhere from $35 for a tent trailer to $600 a night for a Class A, tour bus type RV.

    • 5

Review the contract at pick-up and provide a driver's license. The rental company needs to have all drivers present at pick-up. Bring proof of insurance and a credit card to cover the security deposit and the rental.

    • 6

Avoid extra fees upon return of the RV. Return the RV before or on the time and day stated on the contract and ensure the fuel tank is just as full as when you picked it up. Rental companies charge penalties for late return and include fees for refueling.
