How to Rent a Car With a New License

Whenever you receive a new driver's license, some states, such as Alabama, will provide you with a temporary license to hold until your new license arrives in the mail. If you have just received a new license and would like to rent a car, most car rental companies will allow you to do so. If you have a temporary license, it is best to contact the car rental company in advance and ask whether your temporary license will be honored.

Visit the car rental company of your choice to begin the rental process. Most car rental companies also have websites that will allow you to make rental reservations in advance. Select the "Class" of car you would like to rent. The class indicates the size of the car, with economy being the smallest size and full size van being the largest. Keep in mind that the larger automobiles will get less gas mileage. Smaller cars also cost less to rent.

Present proof of your own car insurance to rent the car. Your insurance policy should have collision and theft coverage. If you do not have your own insurance, most car rental agencies will allow you to pay an extra fee to use its insurance package. The insurance is required to protect the company from losing money if something should happen to the car while it is in your possession.

Present your driver's license to the car rental agent and complete the car rental agreement. Be sure to read the agreement thoroughly before signing it. The agreement will have important information such as the mileage allowed, where you can drive the car, fuel charges and driver responsibilities.

    • 4

Present your method of payment to cover rental fees and security deposit. Most car rental companies will only accept a major credit or debit card that carries a major credit card logo. The debit card must be connected to your checking account. Most rental car companies will not accept pre-paid debit cards as a form of payment.

Inspect the car before driving off the lot. If you notice any damage, such as scratches and dents, notify the car rental company. Be sure to inspect both interior and exterior. By doing this, you will not be responsible for pre-existing damage. Return the car on the date and time specified in your rental agreement. The car should be returned with a full tank of gas. If you return the car and it is not full of gas, most companies will charge expensive fuel costs to refill it.
