Ferguson is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. It sits approximately 12 miles (19 km) northwest of downtown St. Louis.
Originally a railroad stop (Wabash, Frisco lines) serving St. Louis commuters. Post-WWII suburban growth brought white flight from St. Louis. By the 1990s, demographic inversion accelerated as Black families moved in, while economic disinvestment and fragmented municipal governance (90+ municipalities in St. Louis County) strained services.
Ferguson became a global symbol after the August 9, 2014 shooting of Michael Brown Jr. (unarmed Black 18-year-old) by white police officer Darren Wilson. The ensuing protests, militarized police response, DOJ investigation (finding systemic racial bias in policing/courts), and rise of the Movement for Black Lives centered Ferguson in the national conversation on race, policing, and municipal court reform.
Ongoing efforts: Consent decree implementation, community policing, economic development (Emerson Electric HQ, retail revitalization), and civic engagement. Ferguson remains a case study in suburban demographic change, fragmentation, and the struggle for equitable governance.
