Yemen's Coastal Aquifer: A Confined Groundwater System

The coastline of Yemen is underlain by a confined aquifer system. Groundwater is stored between tightly packed layers of rock, sediment, or clay that restrict flow. Recharge occurs from rain and river water seeping into mountain rocks and flowing underground toward the sea. This aquifer is a vital water source for the country.
