Gold in Rio de Janeiro? Not the Region to Look

Rio de Janeiro is not known for gold deposits. Brazil's significant gold mining occurs primarily in the state of Minas Gerais (Portuguese for "General Mines"), which has a long history of gold, diamond, and iron ore extraction. If you're interested in gold prospecting or mining history in Brazil, Minas Gerais is the relevant region.
