How did the south get help with its thousands of freed slaves?

The federal government provided several forms of assistance to the South to help support its newly freed slave population. These included:

- The Freedmen's Bureau: Established in 1865, the Bureau provided food, clothing, medical care, and education to former slaves.

- The Homestead Act: Passed in 1862, this act provided land grants to qualified applicants, including former slaves, who agreed to live on and improve the land.

- The Civil Rights Act of 1866: This law prohibited discrimination against African Americans in employment, housing, and public accommodations.

- The 14th and 15th amendments to the US constitution granted citizenship and voting rights to African Americans.

These measures helped to improve the lives of former slaves and to lay the foundation for their full integration into American society.
