Why was Portugal able to claim parts of South America?
The Treaty of Torsedillas, signed in 1494 between Portugal and Spain, divided the non-European world between the two countries along a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands. This gave Portugal the exclusive rights to explore and claim lands in South America east of the line, including Brazil.
