Upper Peninsula
The Upper Peninsula (UP) is the larger of the two peninsulas, and it is separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac. The UP is home to some of the state's most rugged and beautiful scenery, including Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Tahquamenon Falls, and Isle Royale National Park. The UP is also a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, fishing, and hunting.
Lower Peninsula
The Lower Peninsula (LP) is the smaller of the two peninsulas, and it is home to the state's largest cities, including Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Ann Arbor. The LP is also home to a number of major universities and colleges, including the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University. The LP is also a major agricultural and manufacturing center.
