How did Singapore get its name?

Singapore derives its name from the Sanskrit words 'Singa', meaning 'lion' and 'Pura' meaning 'city' or 'citadel'. The earliest attested occurrence is in the Malay Annals, where the name 'Singapura' appears in the account of the founding of the city by Sang Nila Utama.
