What do the Hawaii name mean?

Hawa'ii is made of two words, Hawa and 'ii.

- The original and real name of Hawaii is Owyhee, which means "Great land".

- However, the commonly known name is a derivation of the Polynesian myth about the discoverer of the island, Hawaiʻiloa and named in his honor.

- Hawaii is written as "Havaiki" in Tahitian, meaning “Land of the Gods” or "Place where the gods live".

- The term "Hawaiian" is the anglicized version of the Hawaiian word "Hawaiʻi", representing both the people of the archipelago and the largest and youngest island of the chain.

- Hawaiʻi is also often referred to by the Hawaiian name Hawaiʻi nei (literally, "these Hawaiʻi") to differentiate it from Hawaiki (the mythical, ancestral home of the Polynesians) and other places, such as Savai'i, called "Havaiki" in their respective local language.
